Loft 1890. A proper example of the restoration of historic buildings

Фото 1
In Russia, one can find many ancient architectural monuments, yet most of them are in a deplorable state. Nevertheless, there are examples of successful restoration of buildings and structures in the country. One such example is located in Volgograd and is known as Loft1890.

Once, on the site of the modern 10th NKVD Division Street, there were 11 large buildings of the Zhigulevsky Brewery Society. The building in question was constructed in 1890. The first floor housed an office, while the basement contained an icehouse for storing beer. The Zhigulevsky Brewery Society was one of the largest beer producers in Europe, with warehouses in 62 cities across Russia and even in two cities in Persia. Up to 3 million buckets of beer were produced annually, and the Tsaritsyn warehouses (Tsaritsyn, the former name of Volgograd) were considered among the main ones in the country.

After the October Revolution, the building was nationalized and for a long time was used as a food warehouse for the local NKVD's Spetstorh. It suffered the most damage during the Battle of Stalingrad. After the war, it was restored by the Stalingradsantechstroy trust, but by the mid-1990s, the building had significantly deteriorated.

In our time, patrons decided to carry out a major reconstruction. The building was returned to its original appearance, characteristic of Tsaritsyn architecture. Fragments of the old tiles were found, and new tiles identical to the original were made in St. Petersburg.

Now, the building serves as a creative workshop, housing various studios, cafes, and wine and beer bars. Regular exhibitions, presentations, and film screenings take place here. Loft1890 has become a modern landmark of Volgograd and received the prestigious "Phoenix" award from the Agency for the Management and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments for its restoration project.
