The Literary and Theater Museum, the only theater museum in the Republic of Komi, began its work on June 23, 1989, in the Ezhva district of Syktyvkar. Its founder was N. M. Diakonov, a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, honored artist of the RSFSR, people's artist of the Komi ASSR, as well as an actor, director, playwright, and educator. Today, the museum serves as a repository of materials about the Komi theater and theatrical figures of the Republic of Komi, as well as a center for disseminating knowledge in the fields of theater, literature, and other cultural areas.

Since 1995, the Literary and Theater Museum named after Nikolai Mikhailovich Diakonov has been a municipal cultural institution and belongs to complex-type museums. The exhibition area of its main building is 150 sq. m. The first hall presents an exhibition dedicated to the life and work of N. M. Diakonov, the second hall introduces visitors to the history of theaters in the Republic of Komi, and the third hall is used for exhibitions.

The museum also offers a permanent ethnographic exhibition representing the interior of a Komi peasant house. The exhibits of this exhibition tell about the everyday life of Komi peasants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can take advantage of a local history lecture hall, a literary association, participate in theatrical museum celebrations, and bus excursions. As of January 1, 2014, the total number of exhibits in the museum was 11,862 items.
