Lebedev (Kazan) Bridge

Фото 1
On the right bank of the river, near the Kazan church, which was demolished, is the Lebedev Bridge. In the mid-19th century, all the bridges on the Penza River were dismantled for the winter. This was a sensible decision to protect them from destruction during the spring floods. The Lebedev Bridge was considered the most important in the city, as it connected the center with the Ryazan-Ural railway station Penza III, as well as with the areas across the river and the military camp. During the flood period, the City Duma organized a boat crossing, but it struggled to cope with the flow of people trying to get to the other side. Often overcrowded boats collided with ice floes or sank due to overload. The crossing of schoolchildren was particularly concerning. Therefore, the installation of the Lebedev Bridge caused great anticipation among the townspeople and became a significant event, attracting many spectators and volunteers.
