The Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society has declared 2020 as the year of remembrance for Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.

On February 17, 2020, events will take place in Moscow to commemorate the 115th anniversary of the tragic death of the Governor-General of Moscow, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905). In May 1882, he became the first chairman of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society, the oldest public organization in Russia, which actively engages in peacekeeping, educational, pilgrimage, and charitable activities in the Holy Land.

On February 4 (Old Style) 1905, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich was killed by a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, Ivan Kalyaev. When the duke's carriage approached the Nikolskaya Tower in the Kremlin, Kalyaev threw a bomb into it, killing Sergei. After his death, the Society was led by his wife, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.

On February 17, 2020, members of the Society will honor the memory of the Grand Duke at a Divine Liturgy in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, after which they will lay flowers at the memorial cross restored at the site of his assassination in the Kremlin.

On the same day, the first hockey tournament in Russia in memory of the Grand Duke will take place on Red Square. Among the spectators and judges will be prominent cultural figures and outstanding athletes.

A Divine Liturgy will also be held at the grave of the Grand Duke in the Novospassky Stavropegic Male Monastery in Moscow.

The day will conclude at the Novospassky Monastery, where renowned scholars and specialists who have studied archival documents, diaries, and letters of Sergei Alexandrovich will gather for the All-Russian Sergei Readings. For the first time, previously unknown materials and historical documents about the life of the Grand Duke will be presented to the public.
