Few people know that there is also a kremlin in Syzran, from which the history of the city began. It was founded in the 17th-18th centuries by order of Peter I. The construction was due to the fact that the area where Syzran is now located was considered poorly protected and often subjected to attacks by robbers and nomadic tribes. Initially, the kremlin had five towers: four wooden and one stone. To this day, only the stone tower, known as the Spasskaya, with its unique tented roof, has survived.
The Spasskaya tower served as the main gate of the kremlin. In 1717, the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built in the kremlin, which was soon rebuilt. Today it looks as it was updated in 1730. The Syzran kremlin participated in military actions only once, when it was captured by the troops of Emelyan Pugachev. After the peasant war, the fortress lost its military significance, and Syzran became a major merchant city. The Spasskaya tower was converted into a church, consecrated in honor of the Unmade Savior, and its bell can still be heard throughout the city. Recently, the church was transformed into the Syzran Kremlin Museum, which tells the history of this Volga fortress in detail. The territory of the kremlin also houses the Church of the Nativity of Christ, built in 1717.
