The museum was founded by Alexander Mikhailovich Butzko, an enthusiastic local historian. It was thanks to his initiative that the museum began to be established in 1957.

In June 1991, the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR awarded the Sorochinsk District Historical and Local History Museum the title of "People's Museum" for its active work in patriotic education and significant contribution to the development of museum affairs. Currently, the museum has a different status. Since August 2, 2012, it has been registered as a municipal budgetary cultural institution "Local History Museum of the City of Sorochinsk, Orenburg Region."

At the local history museum, one can learn about the history of the city and district, get acquainted with attractions, customs, and everyday life, see interesting exhibits, and learn about outstanding individuals. Familiarity with authentic items of material and spiritual culture not only broadens knowledge and develops taste but also teaches to appreciate and understand beauty.
