The museum was founded in 1995 by T. V. Velikorodova. Until 2000, it operated at a school and did not have official status. In 2000, the museum was merged with the village library, and from 2000 to 2008, it was called "Museum-Library of the Village of Vata." In 2008, the library was separated from the institution, and the museum became independent, receiving the name MBU "Local History Museum of the Village of Vata."

In 2011, the museum moved to a specially built facility in the Cultural and Educational Complex located at: Vata Village, Lesnaya St., 36.

On March 28, 2014, the museum was named after T. V. Velikorodova. By the end of 2016, its collections numbered over 8,000 items. These include household items of the residents of Western Siberia, such as towels, self-spinning wheels, metal products, clothing, as well as coins from the 18th and early 20th centuries.

The museum has two exhibition halls and one display hall. It hosts exhibitions of artists and masters of decorative and applied arts, thematic meetings and lectures, workshops, as well as local history readings.
