The Kovdor District Local History Museum began its work in 1987. Its two spacious halls, the exhibition and display halls, are always ready to delight residents and guests of the city with a variety of exhibitions and the uniqueness of the exhibits. The exhibition, consisting of 12 sections, is created based on the principle of "everything that is the very first" and preserves the history of the Kovdor District, telling about the construction of the city, its development, and its inhabitants.

The museum's collections contain more than six thousand exhibits. Photographs and personal belongings remind us of the people whose names are closely linked to the history of Kovdor: K. M. Koshits, the discoverer of the iron ore deposit; O. M. Rimskaya-Korsakova, granddaughter of the great composer and honorary citizen of the city; A. I. Sukachev, director of the Kovdor GOK; O. Voronova, a Saami poetess; G. M. Kert, a Karelian linguist, specialist in Baltic-Finnish and Saami languages. Among the exhibits from the late 19th century, one can see household items of the indigenous people of the region, the Saami.

A particular pride of the museum is the exhibitions "Minerals and Ores of the Kovdor Complex Deposit" and "Wealth of the Subsoil of the Kola Peninsula," created based on collections of unique minerals, including endemic minerals first discovered in the Kovdor District. Attention is drawn to rare exhibits, such as the souvenir "Sailboat" made from whale baleen, a gift from the crew of the steamer "Kovdor," as well as apatite, baddeleyite, and magnetite concentrates, models of the KGOK quarry, and a portable mica lamp from the time of Peter I. Each year, the museum hosts up to 20 exhibitions on various themes, showcasing works by artists, photographers, and masters of decorative and applied arts.
