Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (born July 15 [27], 1853 in Zhytomyr, died December 25, 1921 in Poltava) was a Russian writer, journalist, prose writer, and editor, as well as an active public figure. He gained fame as a publicist and human rights advocate, actively defending human rights during both the Tsarist period and the Civil War, as well as under Soviet power. Korolenko was involved in the revolutionary movement, which led to his repeated arrests and exile. Many of his literary works were inspired by memories of his childhood spent in Zhytomyr and his exile in Siberia.
