Yuriev Male Monastery, founded in the 12th century, is located at the source of the Volkhov River, near Lake Ilmen. It is the southern outpost of Veliky Novgorod, established by the great Kiev prince Yaroslav, who received the name George upon baptism in honor of Saint George the Victorious.

The Holy Yuriev Monastery is considered the first Orthodox monastery in Novgorod land. It is first mentioned in the chronicles in connection with the construction of the Church of Saint George in 1119. The monastery was founded in 1030 by the son of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Baptizer of Rus, Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

During the tenure of Archimandrite Photii, in 1826-1827, the Horse Tower was built at Yuriev Monastery. It was used as a space for the watchman, caretaker, horse yard, and storage needs.
