Complex of Buildings of the Saratov Branch of the State Bank

Фото 1
The complex of buildings of the Saratov branch of the State Bank is one of the outstanding examples of cultural heritage preservation. However, its appearance has changed over time. The only element that has remained since the beginning is the corner square at the intersection of Soviet and Radishchev Streets.

The first building of the complex, located on Radishchev Street, was built in 1810 according to the design of architect V.I. Suranov for the advisor of the salt management P. Ivanov. In 1837, the future Tsar Alexander II stayed in this house, which attests to its luxury at that time. Poet V. Zhukovsky, who accompanied the tsarevich, left the only sketch of the original appearance of the building, made in the classical style. In 1884, it was reconstructed according to the design of M.N. Grudistov for the needs of the Saratov branch of the State Bank in accordance with contemporary architectural styles.

In 1904, a one-story building with a new two-light operational hall was erected on Konstantinovskaya (Soviet) Street, designed by architect A.N. Klementyev. In 1927, it was expanded and a second floor was added according to the design of N.K. Usov.

The former head of the main department of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation for the Saratov region, Yuri Zelensky, who recently passed away, secured federal funds for the restoration of this building. The restoration was carried out at a high level: the stucco, cast-iron canopies of the entrances, and the striking clock were restored, and historical commemorative plaques were preserved.

Inside the building, there is a small history museum featuring bricks and four-sided nails found during the restoration. Behind the huge windows of the museum, the operational hall, considered the most luxurious in Saratov, can be seen.

Inside the building, there is a strict access control system with turnstiles, a magnificent staircase, and a Venetian mirror. Of particular interest is the original tile. Archive documents showed that the tile was supplied from Germany, and the factory that produced it is still operational, producing tiles under the brand "Historical." During the restoration, the tile was ordered from the original manufacturer.

Based on found sketches, all the stucco inside and outside the building was restored. Luxurious chandeliers were made at the "Saratovtekhsteklo" factory based on original samples. One of the chandeliers, captured in a photo, is original and has hung in the manager's office since pre-revolutionary times.

The first manager of the State Bank of Russia was A.L. Shchiglyts, and the Saratov branch was headed by Fyodor Ivanovich Sharbau. The bank retains a historical safe weighing several tons, with sand between the sheets of iron for fireproofing documents. The locks on the safe are intricately designed.

The State Bank has been located in this building almost continuously since 1867, and its attitude towards its own history deserves respect.
