Many of us are familiar with the names of famous Soviet actors, but few know that there were also outstanding actors and actresses in the Russian Empire whose fame resonated around the world, and whose works are still in demand in the West. Among such figures in the arts, Vera Fedorovna Komissarzhevskaya stands out, a star of the Alexandrinsky and Dramatic theaters of St. Petersburg. She was born on November 8, 1864, into the family of Fyodor Petrovich Komissarzhevsky, a well-known Russian singer and music educator who toured Europe. Inspired by her father, Vera Fedorovna chose the path of an actress. Starting with amateur theater, she soon caught the attention of professionals, including Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavsky, who invited her to play a role in his production.

It took Komissarzhevskaya just a few years to receive an invitation to the Alexandrinsky Theater, one of the leading theaters in the country. Her debut role brought her overwhelming success, and soon she was performing only leading roles, such as Nina in Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's "The Seagull." In 1904, Vera Fedorovna founded her Dramatic Theater, where Vsevolod Meyerhold worked for a time. By that time, she had already toured cities across the Russian Empire for 10 years, receiving enthusiastic applause everywhere.

Vera Fedorovna continued to perform throughout the country, but unfortunately, her life was short. In 1910, she contracted smallpox and passed away on February 23 of the same year in Tashkent, where she had come for a tour. Having lived only 45 years, Komissarzhevskaya left a profound mark on the arts. She was buried at the Nikolsky Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Today, she is remembered as a great actress, and contemporary artist Augusta Ornaskaya created a beautiful portrait of Vera Komissarzhevskaya.
