The tower was built between 1493 and 1495 on the northwest side of the Kremlin wall, which now runs along the Alexander Garden. It was originally called the Kolymazhnaya due to the nearby Kolymazhny courtyard in the Kremlin. From 1676 to 1686, the tower was raised.

The structure of the tower includes a massive square base with machicolations and a parapet, on which rises an open quadrilateral with a pyramidal roof, a watchtower, and an octagonal turret.

The main volume of the tower consists of three tiers of rooms, covered with cylindrical vaults; the vaults also cover the tiers of the completion.

In the 19th century, the tower was named "Commandant" as the commandant of Moscow settled in the neighboring Toy Palace of the 17th century.

The height of the tower from the side of the Alexander Garden is 41.25 meters.
