Bell Tower of the Yugskaia Dorofeeva Monastery (Lost)

Фото 1
The monastery had the shape of a perfect square with sides over 120 meters and was surrounded by stone walls with corner tower-churches topped with domes. In the center stood the Trinity Cathedral, built between 1793 and 1810, with five domes. In the middle of the eastern wall rose a three-tiered gate bell tower, constructed between 1839 and 1857.

In 1920, after the monastery was closed, its premises were used for a so-called 'children's labor commune,' and part of the buildings was transferred to a state farm. In 1922, the authorities seized about 2 poods of silver, 3 pounds of gold, and hundreds of precious stones of various qualities and values from the monastery under the pretext of helping the starving. In the 1930s, due to the beginning of the construction of the Rybinsk Hydroelectric Power Station and the clearing of the future reservoir's bottom, the monastery complex was handed over to 'Volgostroy.' Before flooding began in 1941, the churches were blown up, and the remaining buildings were destroyed.
