The Holy Bogolyubsky Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church, was founded in 1155 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, who was the first after the holy equal-to-the-apostles Prince Vladimir to begin the unification of the Russian land.
The Assumption gate church with a bell tower was built in 1841. This building is a typical example of the architecture of gate churches from the late classicism period, featuring a characteristic planning and volumetric solution. The composition of the building is based on the principle of axial symmetry. At the time of restoration, the technical condition of the monument left much to be desired.
The gate church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary represents a model of church architecture from the late classicism period. It has a four-tiered composition, square in plan, with semicircular rooms adjoining the central part from the east and west.
Brick and white stone blocks were used in construction. The church is distinguished by massive walls and vaulted ceilings with half-columns and porticos, windows with arched and pointed finishes, complex cornices, and keystones above the windows.
In 2014-2015, preservation work was carried out on the site. This included the restoration of the facade and interior walls, the internal white stone staircase, inter-floor ceilings, beam replacement, and the installation of a reinforced concrete ceiling.
Carpentry work was also completed, including the replacement of the rafter system and battens, roofing work, updating the covering of the dome, altar area, and western narthex, restoration of the cupola and cross, installation of new window and door units, interior and exterior finishing work, restoration of entrance steps and white stone floors, installation of parquet floors, and repair of wrought iron gates and metal window grilles.
