Bell Tower of the Trinity Stepan-Makhriš Women's Monastery in Makhra

In the late 19th century, the architectural ensemble of the monastery was complemented by a majestic three-tiered bell tower. In 1847, the builder, hieromonk Georgy, approached the Trinity-Sergius Lavra Cathedral with a request to build a new standalone bell tower opposite the Stepan Church. He planned to arrange a temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" on the second tier. By that time, the old bell tower of the church of St. Stephen had fallen into disrepair, but Archimandrite Antoniy Medvedev denied the request, considering its condition satisfactory and the project of the new construction inconsistent with the old church architecture. That same year, the dilapidated western porch of the Trinity Cathedral was dismantled, and in its place, a stone two-story tent with vaults was erected. In 1887, thanks to the efforts of Igumen Amphilokhiy and the project of architect Alexander Petrovich Beloyartsev, the construction of a new three-tiered bell tower at the Trinity Cathedral began. It was built on an independent foundation on the western side of the cathedral's two-story tent and became the main dominant feature of the monastery ensemble. The bell tower, with a dome, drum, and cross, had three tiers separated by cornices and adorned with decorative kokoshniks. The upper tier with arched openings was framed by archivolts and enclosed with metal grilles, while the middle tier was glazed. Diocesan architect N. Koritskiy noted that the bell tower was sturdy and capable of withstanding a bell weighing up to 800 poods. In 1891, a bell weighing 704 poods was cast at the Samgin factory in Moscow. A list of benefactors, whose funds completed the construction in June 1890, has been preserved, including merchants F.O. Yelagin, A.A. Solovyev, A.I. Osipova, as well as peasants and employees of the Baranov manufacturing partnership.

Igumen Amphilokhiy decorated the porch under the new bell tower with images of Gospel events, partially at his own expense. The paintings were done by the Alexandrov painter Fyodor Dmitrievich Lavrovskiy. In 1942, the Trinity Cathedral, the bell tower, and the church of St. Stephen were blown up, and the rubble was used for the construction of a military airfield in the village of Slobodka in the Kirzhach district. Currently, the Trinity Cathedral and the bell tower have not been restored.
