Bell Tower of the Holy-Sretensky Convent in Gorokhovets

Фото 1
In the main square of Gorokhovets stands the 35-meter bell tower of the Sretensky Convent, built in the late 17th century. It is surrounded by later service buildings of the monastery. The architecture of the bell tower is characterized by strictness and conciseness, with decorative elements concentrated mainly on the lower tier around the entrance and on the slender spire that rises above the octagonal pillar of the belfry.

It is believed that the bell tower was erected in 1689 simultaneously with the Sretensky Church. Over nearly three centuries, it has sunk into the ground by about a meter, but its slender spire still proudly rises.

The monastery's belfry has a shape similar to that of the bell tower of the Nikolsky Monastery. The difference is that its square base includes a passage and entrance to the monastery grounds. Otherwise, they are remarkably similar, which likely indicates the work of the same craftsmen.
