State Councilor David Ivanovich Kludov, after leaving his position as the head of the city of Yegoryevsk, decided to move to the vicinity of Ryazan. In 1860, not far from the Poshchupovo monastery, he, as a hereditary honorary citizen, a first-guild merchant and manufacturer, who became the main benefactor of the John the Theologian Monastery, purchased a country estate. After his death, with the funds bequeathed to the monastery, the monastery bell tower was built, which housed a library with valuable books. The project of this dominant structure was developed by the Ryazan diocesan architect Ivan Stepanovich Tsekhanovsky in the neo-Russian style. The bell tower of the John the Theologian Monastery was erected in 1901 and could be seen even from the Ryazan Kremlin. Its height to the cross is 76 meters, and to the top of the cross, 85.5 meters, which is 4.5 meters lower than the bell tower of Ivan the Great in the Moscow Kremlin. The bell tower has a complete set of bells, the largest of which weighs over 8 tons. On major church holidays, the ringing from the bell tower of the Theologian Monastery can be heard for many kilometers. It serves as a tall landmark of the holy abode, about which Sergey Yesenin wrote: “And it calls them from the great bell tower. The booming sound, like the clang of iron.”
