Kokorev Courtyard

On Sofiyskaya Embankment in Moscow stands the building of Kokorev Courtyard, which served as one of the types of hotels in pre-revolutionary Russia. The main guests were merchants and traders. The hotel was built by the famous merchant and innovator Vasily Alexandrovich Kokorev. At the time, Kokorev Courtyard was considered the most expensive hotel complex. The architect of the project was Ivan Denisovich Chernick, and the construction work was overseen by architect A. V. Bulgarin. The hotel had not only rooms but also a large restaurant, a shop, various storage facilities, as well as meeting rooms and a spacious reading room.

Merchants chose this hotel not only for its convenience but also because of the availability of special rooms for storing goods, reinforced with iron. It was one of the first hotels in Moscow where the restaurant was designed in the 'neo-Russian style', reminiscent of a traditional Russian tavern. Additionally, Kokorev Hotel was one of the first in Moscow to have electricity installed. Among its notable guests were I. E. Repin, P. I. Tchaikovsky, and V. V. Vereshchagin.

Kokorev Courtyard played a significant role in Russian-American diplomatic relations, hosting the delegation of Gustav Fox. The American guests were accommodated in the hotel, and the merchant personally welcomed them, providing 36 rooms and organizing a magnificent reception. Contemporaries recalled that the delegates nearly drowned in a sea of champagne and wine. However, later, due to financial difficulties, Kokorev sold the hotel. It passed to Princess Golitsyna and was then purchased by merchant Shevtsov.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the courtyard was nationalized. For some time, the building was used as a residential house, and the main building was reconstructed with the addition of three floors. In the 1960s, the building was transferred to the Military Academy. In 2017, the courtyard was restored.
