The women's Orthodox monastery in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was founded in the Kentlin area of Sydney on land donated by protodeacon Peter Grishaev from the Petropavlovsk Cathedral.

Initially, from 1955, there was a men's monastery in honor of All Saints. At the same time, archpriest Rostislav Gan was working on the establishment of the first women's monastery. Several nuns from Harbin, under the guidance of nun Elena (Ustinova), temporarily settled in the old building of the Russian Charitable Society. In January 1959, the premises of the men's monastery were transferred to the women's community, which received the status of a monastery under the name 'New Shamordino.' With the relocation of the nuns to Campbelltown, monastic life revived: daily services began, and a dairy and poultry farm were organized.

Artist V. P. Zagorodnyuk, along with his son-in-law V. S. Saltykov and his wife Zinaida Pavlovna, helped to arrange the iconostasis. He also created the crucifix and performed other works to decorate the temple. At the entrance to the monastery, high wooden gates in the Russian style were installed according to Zagorodnyuk's design, built by master M. V. Artyomov and his assistants. He also erected the bell tower.

The monastery played an important role in accommodating Russian refugees from China. Three large barracks and several auxiliary buildings were urgently constructed. After the resettlement of the refugees, the barracks were converted into a hotel for pilgrims, and later small apartments for retirees were built near the monastery. Thus, the village of 'Brotherhood of the Holy Cross' and a shelter for the sick and infirm were established, solemnly opened on August 4, 1963.

In addition to participating in daily services, the sisters of the monastery are engaged in baking prosphora for most of the churches in Sydney.

In 1984, at the age of 93, abbess Elena (Ustinova) passed away. For the next 22 years, the monastery was managed by abbess Evpraksia (Pustovalova). Since August 2006, the monastery has been headed by abbess Maria (Miros).
