Kazan Church (village of Nikol-Raiskoe, Penza region)

Фото 1
The single-altar church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was built from 1833 to 1891 with funds from a merchant from Gorodishche, Alexander Apollonovich Shagaev, who donated 70,000 rubles for its construction. In 1894, for his charity, he was awarded the Order of Saint Anna. The church has a traditional longitudinal-axial structure: the square body of the church with a semicircular apse, topped with five domes, is connected to a three-tiered bell tower through a small refectory. The eclectic decor in the 'Russian-Byzantine' style gives the building a rich architecture. The archivolts in the shape of kokoshniks with a keel-like elevation stand out particularly. Wrought iron grilles have been preserved in the window openings.
