Kaluga House of Crafts

On December 29, 1992, a unique museum of folk art opened in Kaluga. It is located in a mid-19th century house adorned with wood carvings, which is a monument of history and architecture and an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia of federal significance.

The idea of creating the museum emerged in the 1980s, but it was only in February 1992 that a real step was taken towards its realization. The Slesaryev House established the club-museum "House of Crafts," which became accessible to the public at the end of the year and is now known as the municipal budgetary cultural institution of the city of Kaluga "House of Crafts."

The museum's exhibition includes various crafts from pre-revolutionary Russia, each represented in a separate room.

In the "Russian Room," large-scale celebrations and exhibitions take place, hosting most of the museum's guests.

The "Ceramics" room features clay products: Khlyudnev toys, samples of pottery, and Kaluga ceramics for stoves from the 19th century.

The "Wood" room showcases items related to wood processing: barrel-making, self-spinning, wood carving, and painting.

The "Weaving" room contains works by masters of wickerwork and linden bast weaving: woven furniture, baskets, fishing tools, and a collection of bast shoes.

The "Fabrics" room presents items made by Kaluga craftswomen, including weaving, spinning, embroidery, lace-making, and traditional women's costumes from the 18th century.

The last room is dedicated to contemporary decorative and applied arts, featuring works by modern masters who continue the traditions of the Kaluga region.

The museum regularly hosts exhibitions and master classes where visitors can try their hand at various crafts. It also holds celebrations, including Orthodox and children's events. There are clubs and creative groups for adults and children operating at the museum.

Despite its relatively short history, the museum has already received numerous awards and prizes.

In 2001, the House of Crafts opened a branch in the city center, a gallery of the famous Kaluga artist Lyudmila Alexandrovna Klimentovskaya. This is the only place in Kaluga where her paintings and personal belongings can be seen.
