The magnificent Kaluga Church of Cosmas and Damian, founded in the 18th century, is considered one of the most beautiful in the region. The first mentions of the temple date back to 1626, but over time the old church became dilapidated and burned down in a large fire. The current church began construction in the early 1790s, and its solemn consecration took place in 1794. It was built in the Baroque style, and its construction cost 70 thousand silver rubles, which was a significant sum at that time.

Unfortunately, the exact name of the architect of the Church of Cosmas and Damian has not survived, but his work deserves attention. I will try to briefly tell about the history and appearance of the temple. Externally, the church resembles a ship and belongs to a small group of surviving similar structures. It has a five-domed vault and is adorned with numerous architectural elements of varying complexity. Next to the temple is a magnificent bell tower, built in the style of early classicism and later connected to it.

During the Soviet era, the church was closed, and its clergy and some parishioners were repressed. For example, Hieromonk Anthony and Father Nikolai were exiled. The temple itself was completely closed in 1937, and only after reconstruction in the early 90s did it reopen for believers. Today, it is one of the most beautiful churches, an integral part of the historical part of Kaluga, although repairs are still not finished.
