The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the main church of the Omsk diocese, is located in the center of Omsk on Cathedral Square and is considered one of its landmarks. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was destroyed, but in the early 21st century it was restored with funds raised by the city's residents.

Architect E. Wirrich used the design of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, created by A. Parland, as the basis. However, the Omsk cathedral became not a copy, but a reinterpretation of this architectural solution.

Construction began on July 16, 1891, when Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, the future Emperor Nicholas II, laid the first stone. The cathedral was consecrated on September 9, 1898, by the first Omsk bishop, Gregory.

On September 8, 1905, John of Kronstadt conducted the Divine Liturgy in the cathedral, blessed the residents of Omsk, and delivered a sermon.

After the adoption of the "Decree on the Separation of Church from State and School from Church" in 1918, the Bolsheviks demanded the transfer of the property of the Omsk Spiritual Consistory and the Archiepiscopal residence to them. After one of the services, a rally of parishioners took place in the cathedral square, which was dispersed by soldiers. The next day, the Red Guards did not allow people into the church. On February 4, 1918, a cross procession took place, and on the night of February 5-6, arrests of clergy began, during which the sacristan and the cathedral's steward were killed.

In 1919, power in Omsk passed to the White Guards. On April 3, 1919, Archbishop Silvester led a cross procession from the cathedral to the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, A. Kolchak.

After the return of Soviet power, the church was handed over to the "Renovationists," but services ceased in it from 1923. The building remained empty for a long time.

In 1933, the bells were removed from the cathedral for melting, and in 1934, church utensils were taken to the Museum of Atheism and were subsequently lost. The Omsk party leadership decided to convert the cathedral into an opera house, but the acoustics were deemed unsatisfactory.

On February 17, 1935, at the suggestion of the head of the Omsk NKVD, Salyn, a decision was made to demolish the building, and that same year the church was blown up.

In its place, a park was created, which became a place of recreation for the townspeople and was named "Pioneers' Garden" due to its proximity to the Palace of Pioneers, located in the former governor's residence.

In 1999, a cross was erected at the site of the former cathedral, and in 2007, a new church was built here, which is an exact copy of the previous one.
