Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Urzhum

Фото 1
One of the first brick buildings in Urzhum was the Trinity Cathedral. This ancient monument of religious architecture was not the first on this site. According to the Urzhum plan of 1785, the Trinity Cathedral was located slightly to the left of the current one and closer to the river. Due to a crack that appeared in the wall in 1811, the old cathedral was permitted to be dismantled.

In the State Archive of the Kirov Region, there is a document related to the Trinity Cathedral, which states: "Dismantle the old cathedral and the bell tower down to the lower floor, in the lower floor to lay the middle span and make a warm tent in it, and cover it with a roof, so that over time this floor becomes housing for the clergy." However, in later plans from 1835 and 1845, these structures are not indicated, which indicates that the tent did not survive.

In 1811, the construction of a new Trinity Cathedral began, which was consecrated in 1822. It is likely that the bell tower and warm church of the modern cathedral remained from the construction of 1811-1822.

The modern Trinity Cathedral was built between 1895 and the 1900s. Its building impresses with beauty and grandeur: red brick walls with white stone decorations and a silver dome create an unforgettable impression. There are no similar structures in the Kirov region.

In the late 1880s, townspeople and parishioners appealed to the Vyatka Spiritual Consistory with a request to build a new cathedral. After receiving permission, on December 12, 1889, the design was entrusted to Vyatka architect V.M. Druzhinin. In the first half of 1890, the project was approved, and V.M. Druzhinin was paid 100 rubles for its creation. In 1890, the project was sent to the spiritual consistory, and in December 1893, permission for construction was obtained. In May 1894, architect Druzhinin arrived in Urzhum to choose a site for construction.

The laying of the cathedral took place on August 6, 1894, after which construction work began, primarily financed by the faithful. Lumber industrialist S.I. Starodubtsev contributed significant funds to the construction. Bricks for the cathedral were prepared on the Belya River, while white stone was brought from quarries on the Nolka River. Alabaster was delivered from the vicinity of the village of Krasnaya Gora, and limestone from the village of Fedkino.

The domes of the temple were covered with white sheet metal, giving them a silvery shine. To transport bricks to the walls along Bui Street, now known as Chernyshevsky, walkways were constructed. Horses with bricks were led along them by carriers.

Architect Druzhinin visited Urzhum every summer from 1895 to 1898. By the end of 1899, construction was completed, and on October 8, 1899, provincial engineer G.E. Yanchkovsky certified the completion of the work. Present were Archpriest I.P. Myshkin, Priest E. Troitsky, and Deacon Lystritsky.

In 1900, the interior decoration was completed, and on June 1, the main altar in the name of the Holy Trinity was consecrated. In 1901, the northern chapel was consecrated, and in 1902, the southern chapel.

Services in the cathedral continued until the mid-1930s, after which looting began. N.N. Arbuzova tried to find remnants of the iconostasis but was unsuccessful. The cathedral was used as a warehouse, but services in the warm church did not cease.

When the cathedral was returned to the faithful, restoration was undertaken by the rector Father Alexander and the parishioners. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, significant work was done to clean the walls, repair the roof and windows, restore the dome, and install crosses. Today, the cathedral looks almost the same as it did 80 years ago.
