The Russian church community in Canberra, founded by the first Russian settlers, is small but very friendly and united. The foundation of this community is the parish of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist.

The church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1988 thanks to the efforts of the parishioners, and the construction lasted almost 12 years.

A Sunday school operates at the church, where Russian language, music, and the basics of Orthodox faith are taught. There is also a small library and a monthly magazine called "Pretechensky Listok" is published.

Currently, with funds raised by the parishioners, the construction of a Russian cultural center is underway, which will become an important place for the Russian-speaking community and the dissemination of Russian culture and language.

The church has a school, library, and church shop. The school educates children for whom Russian is their native language, as well as children from families speaking other languages. The goal of the school is to teach students the Russian language, familiarize them with the basics of Russian culture, literature, history, and art. Special attention is paid to the development of oral speech, singing, dancing, and drama. The curriculum also includes the basics of Orthodox religion. The teachers have pedagogical education and work experience, dedicating their time to the school without financial compensation. The school is part of the National Schools Association and receives grants to support the educational process. The teachers participate in seminars for teachers of national schools. The parish library holds many books and periodicals, including rare copies.

The church's feast days are celebrated on July 7, September 11, October 6, and January 20.
