The Saint Nicholas Cathedral, also known as the Holy Nicholas Cathedral, is the cathedral of the Valuy Diocese and is located on the grounds of the Valuy Assumption Male Monastery in the city of Valuyki, Belgorod Oblast. It is the largest functioning Orthodox church in the region.
In the 17th century, monk Cornelius founded the Assumption Male Monastery on the banks of the Valuy River, which received official status in 1613 under Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov.
The construction of the Saint Nicholas Cathedral began on May 22 (June 4) 1906, when Archimandrite Ignatius (Alexeyevsky) laid its foundation as the main church of the monastery. The consecration of the cathedral took place on September 1 (14), 1913, by Archbishop Tikhon of Voronezh and Zadonsk in the presence of more than 50,000 pilgrims, in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty and the founding of the monastery. The church was built from bricks produced at the monastery's factory and decorated with plaster sculptures of saints. Initially, it was covered with brown paint, had an iron roof, and gilded crosses and domes. Accommodating up to 3,000 people, the cathedral featured a faience iconostasis and icons made in Moscow. Originally, the church had three altars: the first altar dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and Saint Martyr Queen Alexandra, the second to Venerable Michael Malein, Holy Martyr Ignatius the Godbearer, and Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, and the third to Mitrophan of Voronezh, Tikhon of Zadonsk, and Saint Dmitry of Rostov.
In 1926, the church was closed, and in 1935, a juvenile colony was established on the monastery grounds. The crosses were removed from the cathedral, a foundry was set up in the building, and its cellars were used as a vegetable storage. For a long time, the cathedral remained partially destroyed. In 2002, it was decided to drain and clean the cellars and assess the technical condition of the structures.
The restoration of the cathedral began in 2007 and actively continued from 2009 on the initiative of Archbishop John of Belgorod and Starooskolsky with the support of Governor E. S. Savchenko and the regional government. The work was carried out by LLC 'Valuyki Construction Service' under the direction of Strizhakov D. V. On August 13, 2009, a solemn consecration and installation of crosses and domes took place. On September 4, 2011, Archbishop John consecrated the revived four-altared cathedral.
The cathedral is a large four-pillar five-domed brick church in the Russian-Byzantine style. Its height is about 55 meters, length 37.6 meters, width 32 meters, and the depth of the foundation is up to 4.5 meters. Currently, the church has four altars: the central one dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, the right one to Martyr Eugene, the left one to Saint Mitrophan, Bishop of Voronezh, and in the lower church, there is an altar in the name of All Saints who shone forth in the land of Russia.
