The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Sovetov Square began construction in 2004 and was consecrated in 2007. In 1879, when the village of Melekess became a town, the first stone church was built on the site of a small square. On August 19 of the same year, it was consecrated in honor of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, just like the previous wooden church in Bazar Square. The new stone temple was located on the Kazan-Orenburg highway, on Starozavodskaya Street, which now almost coincides with Kuybyshev Street.

A library and a parish school operated at the Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. An annual winter Nikolskaya fair took place in the neighboring Bread Square, and before its start, as well as before major holidays, the church was whitewashed. Therefore, it was called the "white" church, in contrast to the "red" church of Saint Alexander Nevsky, built in 1894 by architect Sherwood, which also has not survived to this day.

The Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was closed in 1935, and two years later the building was blown up. In 2000, a chapel was built on this site, and two years later, an economic building was converted into a church, which was consecrated in honor of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Today, it is located on the grounds of the new Transfiguration of the Savior Church.
