The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Belgorod, known as the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, was built in 1813 with funds from parishioners. It replaced an old wooden church and was designed by Kharkiv architect Yevgeny Alekseyevich Vasiliev.

According to the clerical report of 1870, the Transfiguration Church is a two-story stone building with a bell tower, constructed through the efforts of parishioners and benefactors. The church has five altars: the main one on the lower floor is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord, in the southern chapel to the prophet Elijah, in the northern chapel to the Myrrh-Bearing Women, on the upper floor to the Epiphany of the Lord, and in the southern chapel, to the west, to the icon of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos of Kursk.

In the late 1920s, after the closure of the Trinity Cathedral, the Transfiguration Church became the cathedral. In 1962, it was closed and transferred to the Belgorod Regional Local History Museum.

The museum opened on October 22, 1973. In its sixteen halls, located on two floors, about four and a half thousand exhibits and historical documents covering the period from antiquity to the early 1970s were displayed.

In 1990, on Sundays, believers began to come to the Transfiguration Cathedral to read the akathist to Saint Joasaph and pray for the return of the shrine. On August 19, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the first Divine Liturgy in almost thirty years was held at the cathedral's walls, led by Archbishop Juvenaly of Kursk and Belgorod.

By September 1991, the church was fully liberated due to the discovery of the relics of Saint Joasaph, Bishop of Belgorod. On September 17 of the same year, the relics of the saint were solemnly transferred to the cathedral with the participation of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia.

Today, the Transfiguration Cathedral is filled with prayers glorifying the Lord, and everyone who enters its arches feels the gracious radiance of the Transfigured Savior.
