In small towns, it is rare to find such a number of ancient buildings as in Rylsk. In addition to several houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, one can enjoy the beauty of Orthodox churches: the Intercession, Assumption, and Ascension churches. On the outskirts of the city is a monastery founded in the 18th century, with a complex of churches from the same period. The history of the Intercession Cathedral is particularly interesting.

This temple was founded by Grigory Shelikhov, known to all who are interested in Russian history. A native of the Kursk region, he opened Russian America (Alaska) and built this magnificent cathedral in his hometown with his own funds earned from entrepreneurial activities in the Russian-American Company.

The cathedral's domes rise above the city, and it is hard to imagine Rylsk without them. The tall structure can be seen from 10 km away. The Intercession Church has a round shape, with three sides cut by straight walls, behind which stand columns forming porticos. On the eastern side, the colonnade adjoins the altar wall. On the western side, a bell tower rises on four massive pylons, creating three entrances to the building through two cross-shaped corridors. The southern porch was added later.

Brick was used in the construction, and the building is designed in the neoclassical style characteristic of that era. Although similar structures can be found in Russia, the height of the bell tower at 50 meters and its many tiers are impressive. At the base of the bell tower are four pylons that form the entrances to the temple.

The Intercession Cathedral impresses with its beauty, especially at sunset when the rays of the sun passing through the bell tower create a halo above it. During the Soviet era, the temple was not abandoned, and today services continue there.
