In 1908, a Baptist prayer house was built in Balashov. This spacious and solid building was constructed with funds donated by Zakhar Ivanovich Smirnov. The house, made of white and red bricks, was adorned with crenellated towers and a pediment. The hall could accommodate 900 people, with visitors able to sit in the parterre and on two balconies. On sunny days, the room was flooded with light, and the acoustics were of high quality.

After the events of October 1917, the Baptist prayer house was closed. Initially, it was used as a warehouse, then it became a cinema. Only on April 1, 1945, was the building transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church to create a temple in honor of Archangel Michael.

The altar, like in most Protestant churches, was originally oriented to the north, where the choir balcony is now located. This is evidenced by the vaults characteristic of altar layouts. In 1945, a stone room was added on the eastern side, consecrated as the altar. The main entrance, which was previously located in a window on the western side, is now bricked up. Later, domes and a bell tower were added. Currently, the temple has the status of a cathedral and is a site of historical and cultural heritage.
