The Znamenskaya Church was built in the mid-18th century in Irkutsk, following the type of a tiered temple, open to its full height. A spacious refectory adjoins the main building, along with an octagonal bell tower above the porch. On the northern side is the Nikolsky chapel, which was balanced by the Kazan chapel, erected on the southern side of the refectory in 1787. In 1794, the church received additional space in the form of the Transfiguration chapel, which was added to the northern side of the square. An arch was pierced in the northern wall to connect it to the main temple. The ornamental design of the Znamenskaya Church demonstrates a connection with other Baroque religious structures in Irkutsk. In the decoration of the cornices, the bands of the towns, in the outline of the frames and volutes. The elastic volutes dominate the decoration of the facades of the apse, the main volume, and the refectory. A series of windows in the upper tier of the temple attracts attention: three closely spaced window openings with semicircular tops, set deep in stepped niches, flanked by columns, are united by two rows of twisted volutes, "kalachis." The fine engraving applied to the profiles surrounding the windows and generously scattered across the frames enhances the play of light and shadow. The decoration of the bell tower is executed using different means. Although a common geometric pattern is used here, among the modest motifs of the pilaster entablatures, the outlines of the openings of the bell and the band of panels stands out a relief with an eight-pointed image in the center. The origins of this decoration, according to some specialists, lie in Ukrainian Baroque, where a popular motif was a cross embedded in the wall. In Irkutsk architecture, the cross took on the form of a polyhedron. Usually, reliefs are placed on pilasters, but in the Znamenskaya bell tower, they are brought out to the edge of the first tier of the octagon, creating a contrast with the smoothness of the wall and producing a noticeable artistic effect. The Znamenskaya Church has preserved items of ancient decoration: Baroque carved iconostases with gilding, icons, and oklads made by Irkutsk silversmiths.
