Фото 1
The construction of the Znamensky Cathedral began in 1816. Work was carried out exclusively during the summer months and lasted for 10 years, finishing in 1825. The church was built from fired brick and faced with Myachkov stone. The thickness of the foundation walls exceeds 5 meters, the diameter of the central dome is 20 meters, and the height of the church reaches 48 meters. At that time, the dimensions of the Znamensky Cathedral were so significant that the residents of Kursk compared it to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In the 1930s, the church was closed and converted into a cinema, during which the paired bell towers and corner domes were destroyed. In 1992, the building was returned to the church, the corner domes and one of the bell towers were restored, and the revival of the Znamensky Monastery began.
