Consecrated in 1873, the Bogolyubsky Cathedral with five domes has three altars: the main one in honor of the Bogolyubskaya Icon of the Mother of God, and the side ones in honor of the Meeting of the Lord and St. Sergius of Radonezh. The new stone church, built in the Byzantine-Russian style, stands out among other churches of the Tambov diocese for its significant size, capable of accommodating up to 5,000 people, and its impressive beauty. The central dome, with a diameter of 16 meters, adds to its grandeur, while the height of the building reaches 21 meters. The spacious under-dome area is illuminated by 16 windows. The church has the shape of a cube with a 43-meter edge and replicates the outlines of a Greek cross, reaching an overall height of 64 meters. Its construction is harmonious and well thought out, with the basement floor adorned with large-arch openings radiating from the main pillar.

In 1930, the cathedral was closed and used as a warehouse. Attempts to blow it up were unsuccessful due to the risk of destroying neighboring houses. In the 1930s and 1940s, many townspeople witnessed the appearance of the Holy Virgin near the cathedral walls, which helped preserve the church and monastery buildings during difficult times.

After the war, the unique domes were removed, and the basement housed a salt warehouse. For many years, atmospheric precipitation and salt destroyed the brickwork and obliterated the wall paintings. In the 1960s, schemamonk Seraphima Belousova predicted that the cathedral would be restored. The authorities recognized it as a monument of architecture and began restoration, removing salt from the building.

In 1990, the cathedral was returned to the believers, and in 1991, services resumed. In the first years after reopening, several icons, including the Kazan Mother of God and St. Mitrophan of Voronezh, were reported to have oozed myrrh. In 1993, Patriarch Alexy II visited the cathedral. Today, restoration continues, and a bell tower-chapel has been built in honor of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.

The Bogolyubsky Cathedral in Michurinsk has once again become one of the most beautiful churches in Tambov region. Monastic life is being revived, and there is hope for the restoration of the Bogolyubsky Women's Monastery.
