The Kabansky Local History Museum named after M. A. Lukyanov is part of the MAU "Kabansk Central Intermunicipal Library." It was opened on October 10, 1997, and in December 2004, it was named after Mikhail Alexandrovich Lukyanov, a well-known researcher of the Kabansky District. For 19 years, the museum has attracted residents and guests of the district by conducting educational events and exhibitions of artists and masters of decorative and applied arts.
The museum is located in a historic building in the center of the village of Kabansk, which is an architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century. Previously, the house belonged to the merchant family Eidelman. The museum houses 2,608 exhibits, of which 987 belong to the main fund, and 1,621 to the scientific auxiliary fund. Most of the exhibits are authentic: these include documents, photographs, awards, and items of ethnography and numismatics.
The museum has four exhibition halls dedicated to the residents of Baikal, geology, flora and fauna, and the ecology of the lake. The collection of archaeological artifacts tells about the ancient inhabitants of the Kabansk land and also pays attention to the culture and everyday life of the local population. Documents and military awards are presented here. The core of the collection consists of exhibits that survived the fire at the Kabansk Secondary School Museum, including household items and archaeological finds. Photographs and copies of documents were obtained from the Archive of the Republic of Buryatia. In 2009, the hall of Russian life "Russian Gornitsa" was opened. The museum actively implements new interactive forms of work and develops tourist programs for schoolchildren, including visits to museums in the Kabansky District, sacred sites, and cultural attractions. Since 2014, the cultural and tourist tour "Baikal Knot" has been implemented. The museum has a souvenir shop with products from local craftsmen. To attract visitors, brochures and business cards are published, and the museum's logo has become recognizable due to its active use in advertising.
