One of the houses (Bolshaya Polyanka, 20, building 2) has been preserved from the previous owners, while the others were built for the needs of the community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The central element of the ensemble is the pseudo-Russian church of the Iverskaya Icon of the Mother of God, built in the 1890s according to the design of architect Sergey Konstantinovich Rodionov. In 1901, a dormitory for the sisters appeared from the side of Malaya Yakimanka, designed by Ilya Yevgrafovich Bondarenko. Shortly before the 1917 revolution, Dmitry Mikhailovich Chelishchev erected neoclassical buildings for a pharmacy and therapeutic and surgical departments along the red line of Bolshaya Polyanka. The eclectic nature of the construction from different decades became the main feature of the architectural ensemble of the community.

The Iverskaya community of sisters of mercy was under the patronage of Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich Romanov and his wife Elizabeth Feodorovna. Sisters could be girls and women aged from eighteen to forty. They were provided with everything necessary and engaged in charitable activities. The main work of the sisters took place in the hospital, outpatient clinic, and pharmacy, where they cared for the sick and assisted doctors. With the onset of World War I, the sisters not only cared for patients in the hospital but also went to the front to assist the wounded. In the early 20th century, the Iverskaya community of sisters of mercy was one of the largest in Moscow, with over three hundred participants.

After the revolution, the Iverskaya church was closed, and the buildings of the ensemble were used as a warehouse. Initially, a nursing school was located on the community's territory, and later City Hospital No. 20 named after Timiryazev was established, for which additional buildings were constructed. Today, the Iverskaya church has been restored and returned to the faithful, and services are once again held there.

Currently, all the buildings of the community of sisters of mercy and the Timiryazev hospital are occupied by the Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology, led by the renowned pediatrician and surgeon Leonid Mikhailovich Roshal. The ensemble between Bolshaya Polyanka and Malaya Yakimanka represents a complex of buildings not connected by a unified style.

The church of the Iverskaya Icon of the Mother of God is executed in the style of Vladimir-Suzdal architecture with characteristic arcature-columned belts and pointed finishes of the portals. The former dormitory of the sisters, built by architect Bondarenko, is an example of Moscow Art Nouveau with simple vertical decorations. Chelishchev's buildings on Bolshaya Polyanka resemble a neoclassical urban estate with a pilastered portico and a pediment of the main house, as well as two wings on the sides. The stylistically diverse ensemble of the former community is not perceived as a single whole.
