On the southeast outskirts of the village of Ivanovo, since the late 18th century, there was the Assumption Cemetery, where Smirnov Street and the "Melanzhist" garden are now located. In 1815, a wooden church was moved here from the former Pokrovsky Monastery. From 1819 to 1821, a bell tower in the classical style was built next to the wooden church according to the project of Vladimir provincial architect E.Ya. Petrov. According to his project, in 1834, manufacturers N.S. Shodchin and K.I. Butrimov began the construction of a new Assumption cemetery church with chapels dedicated to the Nativity of John the Baptist and St. Barbara the Great Martyr. The completion of the church was financed by A.N. Shodchin. The facades of the church and the iconostases were made in the traditions of late classicism, and some icons were transferred from the wooden church. The church was consecrated from September 19 to 21, 1843.

In 1924, the community was accused of storing property transferred by church elder N.T. Shchapov for protection from requisition. On February 24 of the same year, the presidium of the provincial executive committee decided to terminate the contract with the community and transfer the investigative materials to the provincial prosecutor. The Assumption Church was occupied by a community of a renovationist orientation.

In September 1933, the city council considered a petition from workers and engineering and technical staff of the Melange Plant and residents of the social town. They welcomed the creation of a culture and recreation park on the territory of the former cemetery but deemed the presence of a church in the park unacceptable and demanded its closure. On November 11, 1933, the presidium of the regional executive committee decided to liquidate the Assumption Church as a prayer building and transfer it to the city council.

The main part of the church, deprived of its bell tower, porticos, and domes in the 1950s, has been preserved quite well. Since February 1995, services have resumed in the church, and restoration and renovation work has been carried out. On April 8, 1998, a men's monastery was opened at the Assumption Church.
