One of the significant architectural and religious monuments of Ivanovo is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built between 1507 and 1509 on the territory of the ancient city fortress.

Details about the origin and the early years of the church's existence have not survived to this day. It is only known that the architect was Marcus Greek, and the second chapel of the church was consecrated in honor of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

After the Swedes captured Ivanovo in the second half of the 16th century, a Lutheran parish for the garrison soldiers was established in the Assumption Church. When these lands returned under Russian control in 1704, the church was closed, but Orthodox services resumed only 40 years later by decree of Catherine II.

From this time, a detailed chronicle of the church begins. It is known that by 1757 the Protection chapel was restored, which was transformed into a separate winter church in honor of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At that time, there was a miraculous icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God, to which pilgrims from all over the country flocked.

During the revolutions in Russia, the rector of the church was the holy martyr Father Alexander Pavlinovich Volkov. In his youth, he taught at the Alexander Nevsky Spiritual School until he became the rector of the Assumption Church in Ivanovo, succeeding his father, Protopriest Pavlin Alexeyevich Volkov, who had led the parish for almost 50 years. In 1918, the Bolsheviks looted the church, and in the winter of 1919, Father Alexander was shot without trial.

During the war, the church suffered greatly, with the domes and roof being destroyed. Restoration began only in 1976. In the early 1990s, after a long hiatus, the bells once again rang from the bell tower, and services resumed in the church.
