The Church of Dmitry of Thessalonica, one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the Volgograd region that has survived to this day, is over two hundred years old. The first church in honor of Dmitry was built in the village of Melovatka in 1765 with the support of the Naryshkins, who owned the local lands.

Initially, the parishioners of the new church were mainly peasants and soldiers from the nearby garrison. Later, the village passed to the Golovkin counts, and in 1808 it became the property of the princely department.

Over time, the number of parishioners increased, but the old church became dilapidated and needed renovation. In 1811, the foundation of a new stone church was laid, which was completed in 1818. The new church, dedicated to Saint Dmitry of Thessalonica, was significantly larger than the previous one.

Three schools opened in the parish, where most local residents learned to read and write, and the Dimitrievsky church became a center of enlightenment. The closure and destruction of the church during the Soviet era was a heavy blow to the parishioners.

Even during the Soviet years, local residents repeatedly appealed to the authorities to reopen the church, but it was never returned to the faithful. Now the building continues to deteriorate, and with each passing year, the risk of losing the last surviving frescoes on its walls increases.
