The medieval city of Swargas, the capital of the Varangian lands, is an open-air historical and ethnographic museum. It has been recreated to full scale as a fortress of the Baltic Slavs from the early Middle Ages, specifically the 8th to 11th centuries, a period marking the emergence of Russian statehood. The name "Swargas" comes from an Indo-European word meaning "Sunny Sky." Project participants are engaged in research aimed at recreating social relations and daily life in the conditions of the early Middle Ages, as well as studying historical and archaeological issues of the "Viking Age" (8th-11th centuries). The high educational level and successful experimental activities of the museum are confirmed by its acceptance in 2017 into the International Organization EXARC. This organization unites renowned open-air museums and archaeological parks engaged in experimental archaeology in 40 countries worldwide.
