The museum was founded on April 1, 1989, on a voluntary basis, and its daily management was entrusted to the culture department. The first director was Nikolai Filippovich Kiryano, a history teacher who had a deep knowledge of the local history from ancient times to the present. In its first year of operation, the museum was visited by 2,012 people, and the collection included 591 exhibits. In 1991, Lydia Petrovna Kozlova became the director. Currently, the museum is headed by Gennady Timofeevich Savostin, a creative person passionate about his work. The museum's collection has grown to 4,452 exhibits. In 2016, the museum building was renovated, giving it a new look.
