The Historical and Local Lore Museum of the Gulkievichi District was founded in 1977. Initially, it held the status of a district museum of military and labor glory, and its exhibition included materials about local residents who participated in the Great Patriotic War, workers of the rear, as well as documents related to the name of the Hero of the Soviet Union, cosmonaut V. V. Gorbatko, who glorified the Gulkievichi District with his feat in space.

The museum was created by a participant of the Great Patriotic War, Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR E. S. Smyk. Later, it was headed by a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR and former editor of the district newspaper 'Prikuban Skra' E. M. Yereshko.

One of the key areas of the museum's work is the organization of exhibitions, which include various genres: collectible and thematic exhibitions, held both in the museum halls and outside of it. The museum constantly features four exhibition halls dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet period, and the exploration of space. Special attention is drawn to the hall showcasing the history of traditional and ritual Russian dolls. This author project was developed by the museum's research associate T. I. Chernova, who created over 150 unique dolls.

The museum's collections hold valuable exhibits and documents reflecting the history of the district, region, and country. The museum's particular pride is the exhibits donated by the Yuri A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, including a 5-meter model of the TMA spacecraft, a descent module, tablets with photographs of cosmonaut training, special clothing, and much more, which generates great interest among visitors.

The museum staff has developed tourist routes to the sites of military glory in the district, organizes field excursions, museum classes and quests, lectures and workshops, meetings with the city's creative intelligentsia, competitions for young reciters, and many other events, diverse in genres and themes.
