The Historical and Art Museum "Bolshoye Murashkino" opened its doors on September 1, 1962. Its exhibitions feature over eight thousand items that make up the museum's core collection.

Originally established on a voluntary basis, the museum gained state status in 1990. In 1978, a merchant mansion built in the early 20th century was allocated for the museum, which is a monument of the historical and cultural heritage of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Visitors can see a model of an old peasant house with recreated furnishings and the lifestyle of peasants from the early 20th century. A particular interest for visitors is the collection of bones, tusks, and teeth of mammoths found in the area. Other thematic halls display weapons from the time of Stepan Razin, cannonballs, maces, a bomb from World War II, as well as German and Soviet uniforms. The museum also houses a wealth of materials about the life and customs of the merchant class, including a specially equipped "merchant room." A separate pride of the museum is its extensive collection of paintings.
