In the Syktyvdin district in the southwest of the Komi Republic lies a small village of Ozél, located on the right bank of the Vychegda River. The river is connected to Lake Ozélty through a channel. The village was founded in 1678, and by 1859 it was already mentioned as Ozélty. The name of the village in the Komi language translates to "Strawberry Lake."

In 1860, a wooden church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in the village. At that time, there were just over 250 people living in Ozél, but despite this, the church was assembled and consecrated. Six years later, a parish school was opened in the village. By 1916, the population had grown to over 400 people, and the main occupation of the residents was fishing.

During the Soviet era, the Ascension of the Lord Church was closed multiple times; however, local residents preserved the building, kept it clean, and occasionally repaired it. Thanks to this, the church has survived to this day.

In 1984, the Ozél Botanical Nature Monument was established, covering an area of 112 hectares. The district administration decided to preserve the Ozél floodplain as a sample of the natural landscape typical for the middle reaches of the Vychegda River. The Ascension Church in the village of Ozél continues to operate year-round.
