The church was built in 1863 and consecrated on June 28, 1865, by priest Georgy Popov from the Ibskaya Ascension Church. Initially, it was affiliated with the Mezador Church. The building is cold, one-story, wooden, with a warm chapel that was consecrated on December 7, 1866. In the cold part of the church, the altar is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, while in the warm chapel, it is dedicated to Saint Basil the Great.

Due to the small capacity of the warm chapel, at the request of the local clergy, the Velikoustyug Spiritual Administration permitted the conversion of the cold church into a warm one on May 1, 1899. In October 1899, two stoves were installed: one in the altar and the other in the church.

On November 15, 1890, fundraising began with bread and money for the construction of a stone church. At the request of priest Alexander Rogov, the parishioners decided to donate a flour mill to the church, located 4 versts from the church on the Vilya River. They committed to performing the necessary work on the mill, except for carpentry, and to deliver wood for the barn. Due to the dilapidation of the mill and the neglect of the mechanism, in 1893 and 1894, parishioners, under the guidance of master Dmitry Melnikov, built a new mill in a new location. The cost of the mill was about 1200 rubles, and it began operating on November 1.

At the suggestion of priest Alexander Rogov, on June 9, 1887, the peasants of the village of Chukhlyama cleared the forest across the Old Vizinga River to expand and clear the area for hay meadows. The money from the sale of hay went to the church treasury, and the harvest was called Vasilyevskaya.

There was a pious custom in the parish: every two years on June 29, to bring the miraculous icon of Saint Stephen, Bishop of Perm, from the Votchinsky Mother of God parish for prayers in the homes and fields of the peasants.

Processions were held seven times a year: on All Saints' Sunday; on July 27, the day of the Great Martyr Panteleimon, to the cross 2 versts from the church; on the Ascension of the Lord to the cross in the village of Nagornaya; on Holy Trinity Day in the village of Podgornaya; on August 16 to the chapel in honor of the Not-Made-By-Hands Image of the Savior in the village of Old Chukhlyama; on July 8 in one half of the village and on July 20 in the other half, to the crosses, homes, and fields of the residents.
