In 1989, during the period of perestroika and the easing of state pressure on Orthodoxy, the residents of Azov appealed to local authorities for the establishment of an Orthodox church in the city. Permission was granted only after the intervention of Patriarch Pimen of Moscow, who actively facilitated negotiations with local authorities.

For the new church, local authorities provided the parish with a small building, which the parishioners renovated on their own. On August 18, 1989, the municipality allocated a plot of land for the construction of the church. On February 2, 1990, a small church was erected for temporary services, and that same year preparations began for the construction of a larger church.

In 1991, the first stone was laid for the church's foundation, and construction began. The first services in the large church dedicated to the Holy Trinity took place in 1995, although construction was not yet complete. In 2000, construction was completed with the opening of a new bell tower, and in 2001, the church walls were faced with brick and the surrounding area was landscaped.

In 2004, the church was renovated and re-equipped, with a carved five-tiered iconostasis installed. In 2007, the painting of the interior walls of the church began and was successfully completed. Today, the church is considered one of the most beautiful in the city.

The church hosts a Sunday school, a spiritual and educational youth center, and an elective church choir singing class.
