In the village of Stakanovo, work is underway to restore the memorial church in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. This church is notable for being the first memorial in Russia dedicated to the heroes of Port Arthur. The church was built in 1914 in memory of a local native, the commander of the famous destroyer "Steregushchy," Lieutenant A. S. Sergeev, who heroically died in 1904 under Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. The funds for the construction of the church were provided by the hero's father, Semyon Alexandrovich Sergeev. After the war, he sold his farm and house, and with the money he received, he built a red brick church in the village in honor of his son and his comrades-in-arms.
