The St. Nicholas Church was founded in 1894 by Orthodox immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who came to America for work and labored in coal and gas mines, as well as metallurgical enterprises around Birmingham.

Initially, the church was consecrated in honor of St. George the Great Martyr, but it was destroyed by a hurricane. Later, the parishioners built a church in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, which burned down in 1912. A temporary structure was used for services until the community erected a new church dedicated to St. Nicholas in 1916.

Economic instability and unemployment in the 1920s-1930s forced many parishioners to move to more prosperous regions of the country. At the same time, there were difficulties in appointing a permanent priest to the parish.

In July 1965, Bishop Dosifei, the Patriarchal Exarch in North and South America, appointed Father Benedict Tallant as the rector of the St. Nicholas parish. That same year, a major renovation of the facade and interior of the church was carried out, and the rectory was converted, at Father Benedict's suggestion, for various parish activities.

Over time, the parish has been supplemented by Americans embracing Orthodoxy, and today more than half of its members have come to the Church in adulthood or are children of Americans who converted to Orthodoxy.

The St. Nicholas community, though small, is very active and devoted to the Orthodox faith and the parish. The Sisterhood of St. Olga is particularly active, annually organizing a parish fair where Slavic national dishes, as well as souvenirs, books, and church items from the USA, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine are sold. Over the years, the fair has become popular among the local population, attracting people of various faiths and nationalities from all over Alabama.
