Previously, there was the Bogoroditskaya Church in the village of Volokonovka, a wooden structure with a bell tower and chapels: on the right, dedicated to Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh, and on the left, to Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk. It was built in 1774 and served up to 3000 parishioners. The parish included the sloboda Volokonovka, also known as 'Volkonskaya', and the hamlet of Zalomny. The sloboda was known for its trade turnover and held six fairs annually. It was named after the Volkonsky princes and belonged to the Sinelnikov family in the 18th century. Among the priests were Ioann Alekseevich Yurkevich from 1796 and Yakov Merkhalev from 1800.

In 1887, a stone church was built on the site of the old wooden one. According to various sources, the construction lasted from 10 to 15 years and was funded by local merchants and peasants. In the 1940s, the church was closed and used as a workshop for repairing agricultural machinery, and later as a grain storage facility.

In the 1950s, thanks to the efforts of the village residents, the church was returned to the faithful. In 1999, a new iconostasis was installed and consecrated, and in 2011, the domes were renovated.
