The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Bolshaya Khalan, built in the early 19th century, is a monument of architecture.

Previously, there were two wooden churches in the village of Bolshaya Khalan. In 1819, a stone Assumption church was erected. It has three altars consecrated: in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God, in the name of Saint Catherine the Great Martyr, and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The church is a richly decorated four-pillar five-domed structure with six-column side porticos. The large domes of the church are topped with small decorative cupolas. Inside, the vaults are adorned with beautiful frescoes in heavenly shades.

In the early 20th century, the church was regularly attended by 2,161 parishioners, including the village of Bolshaya Khalan and the hamlet of Peschany. Three zemstvo schools operated, and the church owned 6 desyatinas of hayfield and 66 desyatinas of arable land.

During the Soviet era, the church was closed, and the bell tower was destroyed. In the 1970s, the church was reopened and renovated, but by the early 21st century, the building had significantly deteriorated. In recent years, restoration work has been carried out in the church, and it is now open for worship.
